Camera Design for Scotty.ai

Scotty Labs started at SRI (Stanford Research Institute) and in a short time grew into an autonomous vehicle company. I was part of the core team initially hired at the startup and was with the company until it was acquired by DoorDash, in August 2019. Our system utilized a collection of special machine vision cameras, each requiring adjustability as well as resistance to the elements. I designed a set of modular enclosures with CNC-machined aluminum and 3D-printed plastic components.

The camera and lens combination was selected based on the requirements of the system, which for this project was being able to see in all directions. This version of the case uses a wide-angle fisheye lens. Since the design is modular, many lens combinations can be used ranging from 100mm to 35m and others. The camera module itself uses an image sensor with high sensitivity and a global shutter. The system was deployed on an autonomous truck and survived numerous rain storms. The design itself was done in Solidworks.
